Representations of Britishness
My realistic representation of britishness is “Attack the Block”, the film was shot in Elephant and Castle and all the cast and crew are British. The film is taken in an urban estate, the movie starts off with a women getting robbed, or mugged as we would say. This is typical in Britain, and even more common in places like this. The characters represent modern day Britain really well, from the clothes they wear to the way they speak. People from East London, who have watched this film, will definitely recognize the street talk or slang. Also, the fashion or the swagger of the characters are really up to date, the jumpers, the hats and the jogging bottoms all represent modern day British culture to the point.
Apart from the throat ripping, flesh eating aliens. It is a genuine and realistic representation of Britishness, if aliens really did land in our back garden how would we react to it; well that’s what this movie shows us, this is the true way we would respond to an alien invasion. The type of British audience that could identify with this film are, people who are in the same situation as these teenagers in the film, who live in urban estates. But also, the same modern teenagers that can relate to the clothes the language, and the way they act.
My unrealistic representation of britishness is “Harry Potter”, most of the film is made in Scotland, and all the cast and crew are British because, J.K. Rowling insisted that she wanted all of them to be British. Although the story is about wizards and magic, the places that the film was shot in show old fashioned Britain. It’s a transition from when he is in his adopted home to the wizarding world, from modern to old fashioned.
Considering that it is about magic, it’s not a realistic representation. But there is a possibility of it representing the old Britain because of the way they speak, the way they dress, apart from the robes. The different cultures and backgrounds, that have come together to make possibly the best British film so far and may ever will be. The type of audience that this film might appeal to is the harry potter fanatics, people who like fictional films, sci-fi fanatics. But the best audience are families, who have been following harry potter since the beginning, and thus making this film one of the most successful films in the world.
From the start:
To the finish:
The two films are diverse; “Attack the Block” has a more modern view of Britain, where as “Harry Potter”, delivers a historical motif. “Attack the Block” is a hard gritty urban film about teenagers today and how they would react to an alien invasion. “Harry Potter” is a continuous story of a struggling battle between Harry Potter himself and the dark lord Voldemort. In “Harry Potter” their dialogue has a medieval aspect; on the other hand “Attack the Block” tends to have more colloquial language. Although the both films are dissimilar, they are family orientated, appealing to those of all ages.
