The films I have selected is Attack the Block and Independence Day, Attack the Block is a British film and Independence Day is an American film, they both involve an alien invasion and both include action with a sci-fi genre.
Independence Day stars Will Smith, who is well known for the TV drama fresh prince of bel air, and many other films like I am Legend and Hancock. It also stars Jeff Goldblum, who is mostly famous for Jurassic Park. Attack the Block stars Nick Frost, who is famous for Shaun of the Dead, Paul, Hot Fuzz and many other films. The audience for Independence Day are mostly sci-fi fanatics, families and people who like action packed films. Attack the Block may appeal to people who are in the same situation as the teenagers, living in council flats and also sci-fi fanatics.
The music in Attack the Block is taken from other films, and the sound effects are basic. But it creates a very scary nervous and intense atmosphere. The dialogue used in this film is also quite basic and there are more longer conversations. The music for Independence Day is more dramatic, when they go to war, when they discover the alien. Also I think there maybe theme songs made just for the film and the sound effects are very good, they also grab the audience’s attention, and add to the atmosphere.
The camerawork in Independence Day is more complex, with more scenes in various locations. Attack the Block is more stationary and in just one location. The editing in Attack the Block is good and can really grab the audience’s attention, however, with a low budget it could not be the best. Which therefore means it relies on the graphics and the action sequences. Independence Day has a more expensive look, with the stunts and the graphics, which makes it more action packed.
The mise-en-scene in Attack the Block is to a high quality, but is more realistic because it was shot in a council estate; it is more ordinary and plain. This is because of its quite low budget of $13,000,000. In spite of this, I thought it was still a very good film and would recommend it to anyone. Independence Day has more of a Hollywood finish, and is shot in more variety of places. This is because of its budget of $75,000,000.
The target audience for Attack the block are people in the same situation as these teenagers, people who live in council flats and people who can relate to the language and the clothes they where. The target audience for Independence Day are sci-fi fanatics, families and especially people who like action packed films.
Hollywood:
Independent:
In conclusion, they are both fantastic films and I would recommend it to anyone. There are actors in Independence Day that are well known than in Attack the Block. The sound effects in both films are good, but it is of higher quality in Independence Day. The camera work in both films are great, however, in Independence Day there is more variety of shots, and have been taken in different locations. The Editing is brilliant in both films, but comparing the special effects and graphics Independence Day has more special effects and has a more expensive look and feel to it, even though it was released in 1996. This maybe because the budget for Independence Day is $75,000,000 to make, where as, the budget for Attack the Block is $13,000,000.
